26th Annual Creek Cleaning was held March 4, 2017
in conjunction with the Austin Park Foundation’s
15th annual “It’s My Park Day” celebration.
We had one of our most successful creek cleanings in years this last Saturday.
Thank you to everyone who participated! Also, a big thank you to Fair Bean Coffee whose donation got us started in the morning, as well as breakfast bars from Austin Parks Foundation/ Wheatsville Coop and finished with El Mercado’s tacos and Lucy’s fried chicken – our reward after the work was done.
About 80 people, neighbors and community volunteers, met at 8:30 am just as the rain was letting up. Together, we pulled over 200 bags of trash plus a few mattresses, card board boxes, etc., out of the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt, Ricky Guerrero Park and Nicholas Dawson Park. We finished about 30 minutes before the rain started up again for good.
This is the cleanest our parks have been in a while and we would like to keep it that way. A suggestion – when you go for a walk in any of our green spaces, take a small bag and collect just a few pieces of trash along the way. It does not sound like much, but it really, really helps.
Note: We are planning a Trail Completion Celebration in a few weeks.
BCNA Parks Committee
Since 1991 … a yearly tradition of hauling the flood-borne dreck from the creeks to make our little natural spaces a little more natural feeling and to send a clear message to dreck — not here, not now.
We’ll meet at the Gibson/South First entrance across from El Mercado and enjoy some freshly brewed coffee and snacks provided local restaurants and then teams will move to different parts of the two creeks (East and West Bouldin).
Around 11:30 AM we will meet back where we started for a lunch, once again provided by our business friends.
Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Please dress in long pants to guard against possible contact with poison ivy and wear sturdy shoes. Please don’t forget mosquito spray. Be prepared to get muddy and dirty and have a good time. Kids, dogs, and family friends welcome.
Bonus: register on the Austin Parks Foundation site for our cleaning and you’ll get a nifty T-shirt out of it.
Our tenacious website is looking for writers to help distribute information related to the area and keep our readers informed. This can be announcements on events, restaurants/commercial, volunteer opportunities or whatever.
We provide training (it’s like writing an email) and can work with you how to add media, link to content, and create some cool content. Email Gary Hyatt or for more info on how to get involved…
West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt:
Our last invasive-species-removal work day of the year will be held this Saturday, Dec 8.
We cleared the area around the BMX trails already and will now move on to the next section, north of the entrance on the upper trail. I walked the area several times last week and found a few ligustrum, a few chinaberries and lots of nandina.
We will provide gloves and tools, but if you have small cutters, please bring them for the nandina. There is not much poison ivy in the area but as always, please wear long pants, long sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes. There are also some completely poison-ivy-free zones for those of you allergic to it.
Meeting time is 8:30 am at 1200 South 6th Street, off Gibson Street. We will work until noon. If you cannot make it all morning, please consider just helping for an hour or two.
We will have coffee and tacos for those who get there early.
