Spring is here! Know your Native Plants!

Spring quickly turns to summer in these parts – and summer can be brutal. Native and adapted plants can help you get through the heat with a minimum of watering and maintenance and help your neighbors ( anoles, armadillos, bats, bees, butterflies, geckos, etc ) by providing habitat and food for our local and migrating wildlife.

The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department developed this plant guide in collaboration with local nurseries and the Travis County Ag Extension:

https://austintexas.gov/department/grow-green/plant-guide

By purchasing native and adapted plants and being an educated consumer of these varieties you can help build a market for plants that are harder to propagate – but are more ecologically useful.

27th Annual BCNA Creek Cleaning 2018-03-03

“Big Fun in the greenbelt on Saturday – thanks to Ingrid with her mighty network of connections and organizational abilities, and all the folks who pitched in!”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Ronnie D                                                                                                                            BCNA Parks Committee

“More than  80 neighbors and community volunteers met at the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt for the 27th Annual BCNA Creek Cleaning Party yesterday morning. Together we removed over 120 bags of trash, as well as tents, clothing, carpet remnants, cardboard and small electronics. In addition, the abundance of nandina, a fast-spreading non-native bush, was reduced by at least half. Hint – there is a lot more to take out…

The weather held up and everyone had a very good time. For quite a few participants, this was the first time they had spent in our wonderful greenbelt..

We finished off the morning with a delicious lunch from Lucy’s on South Congress: fried chicken, pickles, mashed potatoes, cole slaw. We had neglected to bring eating utensils, but found out that wooden coffee stirs make great chopsticks that worked just fine.…

I posted a few photos on flickr: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmfixY77

Thank you every one who helped, especially the team leaders!

Sincerely,

Ingrid Weigand

27th Annul Creek Cleaning on Saturday, March 3

Neighbors,
We will hold our 27th Annul Creek Cleaning on Saturday, March 3, in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation’s It’s My Park Day. Registration is now open at https://austinparks.givepulse.com/event/68954-Bouldin-Creek-27th-Annual-Creek-Cleaning-Party

Some logistics are still in flux while we are waiting to see how East Bouldin Creek recovers from the sewage spill and whether it will be safe to send volunteers  in for a clean-up.

If it is, we’ll meet at 8:30 am in N Dawson Park on the corner of Gibson and South 1st for coffee, then send crews into both East and West Bouldin Creek areas to collect trash. With enough volunteers, we’ll also be able to mulch trails in the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt. (Alternate plan: meet at the South 6th Street entrance to the greenbelt and work only there.)

Please wear heavy shoes, long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against poison ivy. We’ll provide gloves, tools and trash bags as well as coffee in the morning and refreshments at noon.
Hope to see you there,
Ingrid Weigand
